Pomegranates to be stored in pomegranate cold storage must be of good quality as well as healthy. Most of the pomegranates, which are infected with Alternaria, Botrytis and Penicillum agents, can be deceiving with their smooth appearance. Pomegranates with internal defects become moldy during storage, internal rot is observed and lose their economic value. Pomegranate growers have to establish activities to prevent Alternaria, Botrytis and Penicillum damages, especially for the fruits to be stored. However, the first occurrence of damage and deterioration caused by these disease factors in the fruit, the first entry into the fruit, the spring and summer period when the pomegranate blooms.
Collected fruits can be stored for 3-4 months under ordinary storage conditions. In order to keep the quality intact, it should be stored at 85-90% relative humidity at a temperature of 5˚C for short periods and up to 10˚C for more than 3 months. Before the storage process, the fruits and warehouse should be sprayed. Chilling damage can be seen in pomegranate fruits below 5˚C. As well as pomegranate production, storage techniques are also important in terms of added value to the fruit and better evaluation of the product. Especially in the products to be kept in cold storage for a long time, the health status of the fruit and the rate of contamination with diseases come to the fore.
